There is no arguing or disputing the fact that Wizkid presently, is the number one African artist making wave at the international scene. His style of music is uniquely crafted as a blend of rhythms from Afro-beat, Hip Hop, Reggae, Dancehall and others. The singer gained international relevance with the release of “Ojuelegba” in 2014, which led to a remake by Drake and fellow rapper, Skepta. On the heels of signing on to RCA Records/Sony Music, USA in 2016, he has earned accolades from around the world, placing him on a pedestal as competitive edge above his music competitors in Africa and the world over. The globally acclaimed smash hit-single: “One Dance,” which he co-wrote and co-produced for Drake (topping the billboard charts for 18weeks consecutively) is responsible for catapulting his career to greater heights. This single has paved the way for the winning of various prestigious international awards.
From January to July 2017, Wizkid has bagged eight international awards – 1 BET Awards, 3 Billboard Awards, 2 iheartradio Music Awards, 1 iheartradio Much Music Video Awards and 1 Echo Music Awards respectively – and a total of 44 awards from 157 nominations so far in his career; an astonishing feat no African artist has ever achieved.
As the most-sought-after artist in Africa with colossal online music streaming, he will tour the U.S with hip hop star, Future, this summer performing in four cities –Florida, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut – on “The Future Hndrxx tour,” which kicks-off on July 8 and ends on August 27, 2017. This will be the second time Wizkid will accompany an American star on tour after embarking on “One Hell of a Night” tour with Chris Brown last year. The day three of Wireless Festival, UK held on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Finsbury Park, London was headlined by Wizkid, Nas, Chance the Rapper, TY Dolla Sign, Designer, Tyga, The Weekend and a host of others. He is releasing a mixtape titled: “Sounds from the other side” on July 14 as a prelude offering to the main album schedule to drop subsequently. The 13 track mixtape features international artists such as Drake, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, TY Dolla Sign, Major Lazer and Bucie with 5 tracks pre-released previously for listening pleasure of fans. His iconic status has contributed immensely to the global perception of African music.
The Nigerian superstar recently spoke about his global popularity. “The aim is not really to cross over,” he told The Net. “I just want to make good music for the world.
